Illegal fishing down in May

Ros Chanveasna / Khmer Times No Comments Share:

Instances of illegal fishing dropped slightly in May with 189 cases reported, down from 205 in April.
A report from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said officials destroyed large amounts of illegal fishing equipment, such as barrier nets and electro-fishing devices, while violators paid more than $32,500 in fines last month.
The government has repeatedly attempted to crack down on illegal fishing.
Interior Minister Sar Kheng previously warned government officials in areas surrounding the Tonle Sap lake that they would be fired if they continued to allow illegal fishing.
A four-month government campaign exposed 730 cases of illegal fishing on Tonle Sap lake last month.
