Police in Siem Reap have arrested 13 people for taking part in an illegal betting ring.

The 11 men and two women were detained on Wednesday evening for gambling on spinning top dice and playing cards at a long-running betting facility in Slakram commune.

Police spokesman Hou Vanny said ten of the 13 had only participated in the betting and had been released after signing pledges to not take part again.

“We arrested thirteen people but we only sent three of them to the provincial court because they were the masterminds,” he said.

“Two of them were the organisers of the game and the third was the owner of the venue, a long-running betting establishment.”

The provincial police report identified the game organisers as Sok Moeng, 58, and Hort Bo, 42, and the venue owner as Srong Ra, 42.

Among the items confiscated were 14 motorbikes, three spinning top dice, one plate for spinning dice, one cover and two packs of cards.

“Those others who only took part in the betting were not subject to be sent to the court,” said Mr Vanny. “They only received a warning and were required to sign the pledge.”

The three detained men were still being questioned by the provincial court late yesterday.
