A Cambodian immigration police officer was arrested by military soldiers in Thailand’s Trat province on Saturday.
Sovan Bunthoeun, chief of Cham Yeam International Border Checkpoint, said Second Lieutenant Leng Piseth was arrested in Trat’s Khlong Yai district.
Lt Piseth, who worked at Poipet International Border Checkpoint, drove his personal vehicle through the Cham Yeam crossing at about 10am on Saturday.
He was arrested by Thai military regiment 182 after crossing the border.
An immigration police officer with Cham Yeam checkpoint said yesterday that Lt Piseth had been arrested for involvement with illegally importing vehicles from Thailand to Cambodia.
However Mr Bunthoeun said officials had been given no explanation for the arrest.
“We still do not know why he is being held by Thai border soldiers. The Cambodian authorities are working with Thai authorities to assist him and bring him back to Cambodia if he has nothing to do with any crime,” he said.
Chin Piseth, chief of Poipet International Border Checkpoint, said he had not been informed of the case.
