A 20-year-old farmer in Battambang province’s Mondul district was arrested for torching his father’s tractor and hacking a police officer who attempted to intervene.

Deputy district police chief Ros Limsoeun said that Phea Sopha was charged with intentionally causing damage and intentional acts of violence. If convicted, he could spend up to five years behind bars for each charge. “He was angry at his father for forcing him to plough the rice fields,” Mr Limsoeun said.

“He had also been drinking. He then poured petrol on his father’s tractor and set it on fire, causing one tyre to be destroyed.

“After he burned the tractor, police tried to intervene. That’s when he took an axe and began attacking and hacking our police officers, one of whom was seriously wounded,” he added.
