Immigration police yesterday raided homes in Phnom Penh’s Prek Phnov district, arresting 17 Vietnamese nationals for living and working in Cambodia illegally.
“The 17 Vietnamese people will be deported and barred from returning to Cambodia,” said General Sok Phal, director-general of the Interior Ministry’s General Department of Immigration.
The government’s crackdown against foreigners who have overstayed their visas or crossed the border illegally resulted in 3,509 immigrants being deported and barred from the kingdom in 2016.
The deportees comprised 63 different nationalities. Of the total, 2,570 were Vietnamese.
Since April 2014, 11,661 immigrants of 72 nationalities have been deported and barred permanently from Cambodia.
