Police in Kampong Cham town have arrested two fake monks for collecting donations from residents in Boeung Kok commune to buy drugs.

Town deputy police chief Sin Seng said the monks were detained after the provincial department of religion told police about their behaviour.

“Normally, monks don’t walk and collect donations after 5pm,” he said. “However these two monks were still collecting donations from people at about 5.30pm, so the department of religion was suspicious and asked our forces to arrest them for questioning.

“When the provincial department of religion checked them, they did not have monk identification cards, so the department defrocked them.”

The fake monks were identified as Sambath Sopanha, 17, and Taing Kimhout, 30, who also tested positive for drugs.

The two were sent to the provincial court.
