A man charged with killing and mutilating his adoptive father has died of an overdose of medication in prison.

Building worker Troeng Borey, 30, had been charged with murdering 74-year-old Hak Hean in 2015 by cutting his throat, stabbing him in the abdomen and cutting off his penis.

He was arrested in February after going on the run.

Major Seng Saroeun of Pursat provincial police said Mr Borey had a mental illness. During his stay in prison, he took daily medication to treat it.

“He took an overdose of his medication,” Major Saroeun said yesterday. “He died on his way to hospital.”

Bakan district police officer Chan Sophal said Mr Borey had admitted to the murder and had blamed his illness.

“He confessed that he decided to kill the victim because he got angry with him for berating and beating him when he forgot to cook or did not clean the dishes,” Mr Sophal said.

After the killing, Mr Borey fled to live and work on a sugar farm and as a construction worker near the Thai border in Banteay Meanchey province.

He was arrested after he returned to visit his mother, whom he missed.
