The man responsible for an arson attack in Siem Reap province’s Prasat Bakorng district was arrested on Sunday evening.
The suspect Sok Heng set alight a house where his wife and the man he suspected she was cheating on him with were sleeping during the early hours of Sunday morning.
He had been hiding in the vicinity of the crime scene since the attack, but came out because he was thirsty.
“After burning the house, he escaped and hid in forest to see if the victims died or not,” Siem Reap police chief Noun Rith said.
“Eventually he got hungry and thirsty, so he went to the homes of locals asking for water. They recognised and reported him.”
The police chief also clarified previous reports which said the suspect’s wife, 35-year-old Vang Por, was in the torched house with her new husband. The two victims were unmarried, he said.
“The suspect had been working in Phnom Penh and thought his wife was cheating on him.
“He came back to Siem Reap on the day of the attack, but instead of returning home immediately, he sneaked to the house where he thought his wife would be, to see if she was cheating on him,” Mr Rith said.
When he found his wife sleeping with another man, Yong Borey, he poured gasoline on the house and set it on fire.
Mr Borey is recovering at the provincial hospital.
Ms Por has been sent to Phnom Penh due to the seriousness of her injuries.
