Im Suosdey, the former president of the National Election Committee, will become a member of the Constitutional Council of Cambodia on Tuesday.

The National Assembly will appoint Im Sousdey to replace his Excellency Pit Tangsan, who died last month.

Three people had been shortlisted for the position: Im Suosdey, former lawyer, Monh Saphan, and a former teacher, Thong Sim.

“We selected Im Suosdey because he fulfilled all the requirements of the position,” said National Assembly spokesman Leng Penglong.

The requirements were that his appointment was backed by 13 lawmakers, he had certificates of education in both law and economics, and had worked for at least 15 years in the civil service.

The two other candidates did not meet all these conditions, said Mr Penglong.

Mr Sousdey worked for the NEC from 1998-2015, and as president in his last 13 years there. He had since been a legal adviser to the government with the same authority as a senior minister.
