A 77-year-old Buddhist monk has been defrocked and expelled from his pagoda for having sex with his 49-year-old girlfriend.
Police caught Venerable Teav Chhuon in the act at the temple in Pursat province’s Krakor district.
Bun Sarith, deputy chief of Krakor district police, said officers had been aware of the affair for some time.
The monk was known to visit his girlfriend regularly, but police had no proof of their sexual relations in order to have him defrocked.
Mr Sarith said the monk invited his girlfriend to see him at Wat Banteay Dek Krom on Monday.
“He violated Buddhists rules and brought the woman to have sex with him at his pagoda,” he said. “He was caught with her in his room.”
Venerable Rath Saroeun, chief of Samrong Andeth pagoda in Phnom Penh, said monks were supposed to spend their days praying, teaching people to commit good acts and promoting Buddhist values.
They were strictly banned from sex or having girlfriends, he added.
