A military police chief was arrested yesterday, accused of firing seven bullets and threatening to kill his wife after she refused to lend him money.

Lieutenant Colonel Sou Sovannthy, commander of Keo Seima District Military Police, was detained for questioning over the incident.

Sun Bunthoeun, chief of Keo Seima district police, said the officer angrily fired seven shots from his pistol into the floor of the couple’s home in Om-arm Village on Wednesday after his wife refused to give him $500.

He said Lieut. Col. Sovannthy’s wife refused to hand over the money because she believed he would spend it on alcohol and karaoke girls.

After firing the shots, he immediately left the house and drove away.

Lieut. Col. Sovannthy faces up to two years in prison if convicted of illegally using a firearm and threatening to kill.
