A 39-year-old man lost his right leg after stepping on a landmine in Preah Vihear province on Sunday.

Police said the incident happened in Choam Ksan district at about 6pm as five men tried to cross the Thai border illegally to go logging for protected rosewood.

The victim was named only as Sopheak from Kampot province. He is being treated at the provincial referral hospital.

“Of the five people only one was seriously injured, losing his right leg from below his knee,” said So Oeun, chief of Chhoeuteal Korng village.

Choam Ksan commune chief Yin Yoeun said local authorities always warn villagers about the risks of crossing the border illegally, especially to go logging on Thai territory.

“We always tell them but they never listen, especially when it comes to logging timber,” he said.
