The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Friday convicted a Thai drug trafficker and sentenced him to life in prison after he was found guilty of smuggling about 20 kilograms of crystal methamphetamines from Laos to Cambodia last year.
Mr. Leang Samnath, Presiding Judge, said that the accused was identified as Chhay Yaphung Saiphan, 52 and he was charged with “drug trafficking” under article 40 of Cambodian Law on Control of Drugs.
“Though the accused has denied that he was the owner of drugs seized, but he was involved in drug trafficking,” Mr. Samnath said “So the court has decided to sentence him to life in prison and fine him 80 million riels.”
According to the police report on August 1, 2017, Mr Yaphung Saiphan carried 3 kilogram of crystal methamphetamines by a car from Laos-Cambodian borders in Stung Treng province to sell to an undercover police officer who was disguised as drug buyer.
