Pursat Provincial Court yesterday charged three convicts over their alleged involvement in trafficking drugs within Correctional Centre 4 in Kravanh district.
Police identified the prisoners as Leng Sothea, 35; Chhay Sopheak, 28; and So Karuna, 28.
All three are serving sentences from five to seven years at prison for previous drug convctions handed down by Phnom Penh Municipal Court in 2016.
Nuon Kimseng, deputy chief of the provincial police’s anti-drug department, said all three men were charged yesterday with drug use and drug trafficking.
“They were previously convicted five to seven years each by the court. They were then transferred to C4,” he said. “However, while they were serving the term of their sentences in prison they did not correct themselves to be better men. They used drugs and purchased drugs inside the prison.”
“They bought and used drugs from within prison walls,” Mr Kimseng added. Mr Kimseng said the suspects were caught red-handed by prison guards while consuming drugs.
After their arrests, correctional officers seized three packages of methamphetamine weighing 41.7 grams, along with drug paraphernalia.
Mr Kimseng said police are continuing to investigate the case to identify other convicts involved in the trafficking of drugs at the prison.
If convicted, the suspects face four to six additional years in prison.
