A military officer was on Saturday charged by Phnom Penh Municipal Court with illegal weapons possession after being arrested over an incident last year in which he fired several bullets into the air in Chbar Ampov commune.
Nuon Sopheak, a police officer with the municipal police’s criminal investigation department, identified the accused as Captain Mom Thy of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.
Mr Sopheak said the accused was also a DJ in the capital. Mr Sopheak said the accused allegedly fired several bullets into the air after an argument with a group of youths at a nightclub in Chbar Ampov commune in September last year.
“He was arguing over a drink with a group of youths inside the nightclub,” he said. “He fired several bullets into the air to threaten them and then fled the nightclub.”
“He was arrested after a warrant was issued,” he added, noting the arrest took place on Friday.
Mr Sopheak said the accused has been jailed pending his trial.
