Anti-drug police yesterday arrested a Laotian man caught transporting five kilos of crystal methamphetamine across the border into Preah Vihear province.

Lieutenant General Leuk Vannak, chief of the Interior Ministry’s Anti-Drug Department, identified the suspect as Bie Kinkhan Chantha, 34, a Laotian farmer from Champasak province’s Champasak district.

Lt Gen Vannak said the suspect was arrested yesterday at about 10am in Preah Vihear province’s Kampong Sralao district along the border in Kampong Sralao commune.

Lt Gen Vannak added that the suspect was arrested red-handed after he crossed into Cambodian territory carrying the drugs to sell to undercover police.

“This arrest was considered a big success,” he said. “It adds to earlier arrests this month. On March 3, we arrested a Laotian drug ringleader and seized about 30 kilos of meth.”

“We have worked successfully, and have been able to do so because we have received good guidance from Interior Minister Sar Kheng and General Neth Savoeun, head of the National Police,” he added.

Lt Gen Vannak said police were now seeking to arrest other suspects involved in the transportation of the five kilos seized yesterday.

Colonel Yin Phanarith, chief of the anti-drug intervention office, who led the investigation, said the suspect was a drug ringleader in Laos.

Col Phanarith said that about a month before the arrest, undercover police contacted the suspect and ordered drugs from him.

After agreeing on a price, the two sides agreed to set a meeting for yesterday morning, when police arrested the suspect in a sting operation.

“He was arrested after he crossed into Cambodia with the packages of drugs,” he said, noting the drugs were in six big packages that weighed a total of about five kilos.

Col Phanarith added that the suspect remains detained at the provincial police office in Preah Vihear for further questioning and will be sent to court today.
