Police in Banteay Meanchey province’s Serey Sophoan town said yesterday that two people died and another was seriously injured while attempting to move a wooden house in Preah Ponlea commune on Monday afternoon.
Serey Sophoan city deputy police chief Pov Phannara said a report into the incident concluded that two workers died and one was injured.
“Regarding the house falling on the workers, two people died according to the preliminary report, but we don’t know if there are more people injured yet,” he said. “I cannot give the official report yet.”
The National Police identified the deceased as Khlaut Saroun, 59, and Thuch Piseth, 40, and the injured worker as Chhao Bout, 29.
Commune police chief Tin Sambo said the two men were pronounced dead at the hospital after the accident.
“After the accident, three of the seven workers were sent to Mongkul Borey district hospital because this hospital is bigger than the hospital in town,” he said. “However, when arriving at the hospital, two of them were pronounced dead, while the one with serious injuries received treatment.”
Mr Sambo explained that the accident happened when a group of seven workers were trying to move the house by raising it up and setting it on wheels.
“When they tried to get the house on the wheels, the ground caved in because it was soft, making the workers get stuck,” he said. “The house did not collapse, but only caved in the soft soil. The owner wanted to move the house to raise the area by filling in more soil.”
“We did not know about the accident immediately and could not intervene on time because the house is in a secluded area on farmland, “he added.
