Speaking on March 10 at Kandal province’s River Festival, the Prime Minister said he is hopeful that the upcoming summit between North and South Korea will help ease the tensions on the Korean peninsula. He also welcomes the planned meeting between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un sometime around May.

“I am happy to hear the good news about North Korea again talking to South Korea,” Mr Hun Sen said. “This is an important step, both from regional and international aspects, to relief the tension [on the peninsula]. Maybe even more important is that American president Donald Trump and Kim Jung Un, the leader of North Korea, could start a dialogue.”

The Prime Minister also said that these meetings send an important political message to the world, not just to Korea’s neighbours. “The world has of late been concerned about the nuclear threat arising from the friction between the USA and North Korea. If they achieve an accord, this will be a relief for the entire world.”

He is also confident that the Asean-Australia Special Summit will also be successful in tranquilizing the region.
