Rhona Smith, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Cambodia, will visit the country starting today until March 14 on a fact-finding mission.
According to the UN Human Rights Office, Ms Smith’s 10-day visit will include meetings with senior government officials, representatives of civil society and members of the diplomatic community.
Ms Smith undertakes regular missions to Cambodia and reports annually to the Human Rights Council, which appointed her in March 2015. She will present her next report to the Human Rights Council in Geneva in September.
Keo Remy, chairman of the Human Rights Committee, confirmed that he would meet with Ms Smith on Wednesday.
“She is a human rights official, so we will absolutely meet to discuss human rights issues,” he said.
Ms Smith will also hold a press briefing about her findings at the end of her visit before departing Cambodia.
