A 25-year-old American was arrested today in Kampot province over the murder of a 27-year-old Cambodian masseuse in Kep province.
Major General Mao Chanmakthurith, chief of Kampot provincial police, identified the suspect as Sanchez Shawn Daniel, an American tourist.
Maj Gen Chanmakthurith said that the suspect is accused of killing Cambodian masseuse Luch Keang, 27, on Tuesday night in Kep province. Ms Keang was the daughter-in-law of a deputy commander with Kep provincial military police.
Maj Gen Chanmakthurith said the suspect went to get a massage at Linda Khmer Massage in Kep city on Tuesday night and attempted to have sex with the victim, who refused his advances.
“So he caught the victim and tried to rape her,” said Maj Gen Chanmakthurith. “She fought back and tried to flee and he got even angrier.”
“He then killed her by slashing her throat with a pocketknife, killing her instantly at the massage shop,” he added.
Maj Gen Chanmakthurith said that after killing the victim, the suspect fled to hide in Kampot province, where he was arrested this morning by Kep provincial police in collaboration with Kampot provincial police.
After his arrest, police seized the pocketknife used in the attack, Maj Gen Chanmakthurith added.
Brigadier General Pol Sokheng, chief of the investigations department in Kep province, said the suspect is accused of attempted rape and premeditated murder and faces a life sentence if convicted.
The suspect remains detained at provincial police headquarters in Kep province and is due to make his first court appearance tomorrow.
