Two men were seriously injured yesterday morning while making a homemade grenade to use for fishing in Mondulkiri province’s Koh Nhek district.
District police chief Kan Penh said the grenade exploded when the men were pressing gunpowder into a can in Or Boun commune.
“Both of them were seriously injured,” he said. “One of them lost both of his arms and the other had his left eye completely destroyed. They were making the grenade by smashing gunpowder, along with other materials, into a milk can and then it exploded.”
The two victims were identified as Thorn Nhor, 58, who lost his arms, and Phan Na, 24.
Mr Penh said both of the victims were sent to the provincial hospital for treatment.
Or Boun commune police chief Chheav Mes said villagers have been educated about the danger of making and using homemade grenades, but they continue to do so.
“We heard the explosion at 10.30am,” he said. “They made the grenade at their house to use for fishing. “We often have meetings with villagers to educate them to stop this behaviour, but they will not listen.”
