A 24-year-old man was arrested on Sunday evening for slashing the throat of a 28-year-old woman who refused his advances.

The incident took place in Phnom Penh’s Sen Sok district, where both the suspect and victim lived.

District military police officer Meng Sophal identified the suspect as construction worker Pheap Mak and the victim as Khath Soda, a garment worker.

Mr Sophal said the suspect had been in love with the victim for two months, but she was not interested in him.

On Saturday, the suspect saw the victim out with a male colleague at a karaoke bar and became jealous, the officer said.

The following night, the suspect broke into the victim’s rental room where she was staying alone and slashed her throat with a knife, before neighbours intervened.

“He was angry at the woman for denying his love but going out with another man,” Mr Sophal said.

“He slashed her throat with a knife and caused her serious injuries. The victim was later rescued by neighbours and sent to hospital for treatment.”

After attempting to kill the victim, the suspect fled, but was later arrested by local military police.

The suspect was still being detained for questioning yesterday, while the victim remained in hospital.
