Cambodia’s female cycling siblings Heng Sivlang and Heng Sivgech have returned with gold and silver medals from the Asian Cycling Championships in Myanmar, which wrapped up on Monday.
Their medals came in the (Over 35) Women’s Master Event 22-kilometre Individual Time Trial, with Sivlang capturing gold and her sister following close behind in second.
The achievements were celebrated by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport and the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia as well as Nouth Saan, the President of the Cycling Federation.
Saan said the two Cambodian medals from this Asian event were historic and hoped cycling in Cambodia would grow in popularity as a result.
“On behalf of the federation, we promise to continue to push forward with training to help us be competitive for medals on the international arena,” he said.
“We need to select [and train] as many young athletes as possible to prepare for the SEA Games, which Cambodia will host in 2023.”
Gold medallist Sivlang said on her return to the kingdom on Tuesday that while she was pleased with her Myanmar success, she was capable of better.
“Although this time we did well, I will be training harder to get more good results for Cambodia,” she said.
Cambodia dispatched a three-strong athlete delegation to the games and Saan said he and the Federation would look to increase participation among the kingdom’s youth ahead of Phnom Penh 2023.
