Siem Reap provincial authorities have seized many types of fireworks and firecrackers being illegally sold at various markets.

National Police Chief Neth Savoeun on Friday instructed local authorities to strengthen any measures to ensure security and order over Chinese New Year while reminding people to be careful with fire.

“We must remind people to be careful with fire, especially candles, incense, while cooking, around electricity or flammable materials, and ban the burning of fireworks, firecrackers or anything that explodes,” he said.

Sour Moeng, a police officer with the bureau of explosive weapons in Siem Reap province, said yesterday that authorities found many kinds of firecrackers and fireworks being sold at nearly 20 stalls across seven local markets.

“We confiscated them because those firecrackers and explosive devices cause a disturbance and there is a fire danger if not stored properly,” he said.

Mr Moeng added that vendors caught with illegal goods signed a contract agreeing to stop selling dangerous products.

The seven markets were Phsar Leu Thom Thmey market, Samaky market, Por Langka market, Krom market, Phumpeak market, Deum Krolanh market and Prim Prey market.

Meanwhile, Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng also instructed his subordinate officers to prevent the burning of all kinds of fireworks, firecrackers or explosives over Chinese New Year.

“From now on, authorities at all levels must take strict measures to prevent the import of all kinds of fireworks and explosives to Phnom Penh, and inspect and confiscate those items if found being sold anywhere in the city,” he said.

Chinese New Year runs from Thursday to Saturday this week.
