Police in Tbong Khmum province arrested a Cham man for allegedly raping and killing a woman at her house on Friday.
Sralop commune police chief Ket Than said the suspect had raped the victim once before and got her pregnant.
“He was sent to the district police office after being arrested for raping and killing the victim at her house in Dorng Kambet village, Sralop commune,” he said.
“According to information we received, the suspect had previously raped the victim and got her pregnant, but she had an abortion because the suspect threatened to kill her.”
Mr Than said the victim was known to have mental problems.
“This is a shocking case. The victim stayed alone and survived by begging for money from other villagers. She only took a bath once a month,” he said.
Provincial and National Police identified the suspect as Hab Yan, 45, and named the victim – who was also a Cham Muslim – as Sman Cheah, 48.
According to the police report, the victim’s brother-in-law Taing Les, who witnessed the murder, knew she had previously been raped and had an abortion at four months. However, he said the suspect failed to rape her on Friday and killed her because he feared she might tell others about it.
A Tbong Khmum district police officer who requested anonymity said the suspect confessed to the crime and was brought to the court yesterday afternoon.
