Two military police officers were injured in a traffic accident in Stung Treng town yesterday morning while chasing a van suspected of transporting illegal timber.

According to witnesses, the Thalapborivat district officers were chasing a van and attempting to overtake another vehicle when the driver lost control of the car and swerved off the road, hitting a Wing kiosk and overturning.

Sok Pisey, the owner of the Wing kiosk, said the driver received minor injuries, but noted his colleague in the passenger seat was seriously hurt because he was thrown out of the car when it overturned.

“They could not evade an oncoming car and swerved to the side of the road and crashed,” she said. “The driver looked okay, but the passenger was seriously injured and both were rushed to the hospital.”

“The damage to my kiosk is about $420 dollars. We understand that it was not intentional. There has been no discussion about the compensation yet, but maybe they will negotiate later because they are busy treating the injured,” she added.

Thalapborivat district military police officers could not be reached for comment.

Local media reported that the two were chasing a van smuggling timber when the accident happened.

A provincial police officer who requested anonymity said his department had not received a report about the incident.

“Normally, the military police will not report such a problem because it is their own fault and it did not cause any death,” he said.
