A 43-year-old farmer was arrested in Kampong Speu province on Monday for allegedly setting his older sister’s house on fire because she refused to loan him $50.
The incident took place at about 9.30pm in Trapaing Rumdenh village in Baseth district’s Nitean commune.
District police officer Nhem Sophal said the suspect was Hang Sambath and the victim was Hang Phak, 45, who both lived in the same village.
He said that before the arson, the suspect got drunk. He went to borrow $50 from his sister, but she said no because he had previously borrowed money on many occasions and never paid her back.
“He was angry at the victim for not loaning him money,” Mr Sophal said. “He then poured a bottle of gasoline on her house and set it on fire. It completely destroyed everything in the house.”
Mr Sophal added the suspect managed to flee but was later arrested by local police on the same night. Mr Sambath is accused of intentionally causing damage and faces up to two years in jail if convicted.
He was sent to provincial police headquarters before and will later appear at the provincial court for questioning.
