A 48-year-old farmer was murdered on Monday night in Kampot province after being accused of being a sorcerer. Long Than, an officer with Konsat commune police, identified the victim as Ith Thea.
He said the man was found dead in his cottage at his farm in Chhouk district’s Konsat commune.
Mr Than said the murder was thought to have taken place at about 7.30pm.
The victim suffered serious head and facial injuries after being cut many times with a long knife.
Police investigations indicated the victim was alone at his cottage when the attack took place.
“After killing the victim, the suspect left the long knife at the scene and fled,” Mr Than said.
He added that the dead body was later found by villagers, who reported it to local police.
Tuy Koeun, chief of the criminal investigation department at Chhouk district police, said the victim was likely killed as a result of a feud with the perpetrator.
He said the victim had been accused of being a sorcerer by many villagers, who believed he used magic on them.
“Maybe the suspect killed him in revenge,” Mr Koeun said.
He added that police were working hard to find the suspect and bring him to justice.
