A 39-year-old ethnic Kroeung man was yesterday sent to the Ratanakkiri Provincial Court for questioning over allegations that he killed his 18-year-old niece after raping her.
The murder took place on Thursday night nearby the victim’s house in Banlung district’s Kachanh commune.
Teng Savuth, Banlung district deputy police chief, identified the suspect as Chea Den, a widower who was arrested on Sunday evening.
Mr Savuth identified the victim as Ath Sinh, a grade 12 student at Phum Thmey High School in Banlung district. Her body was found on Friday at about 5am on a plot of land near her house.
Mr Savuth said that according to an examination of the body, the victim was raped by the suspect before being beaten on the head with a piece of wood and strangled.
Mr Savuth noted that the suspect helped the victim’s father carry the body to his home upon its discovery.
“He was arrested after our investigation found he was involved with the murder of the victim,” he said. “On the evening the victim disappeared, the suspect went to buy beers from the victim’s shophouse where she was staying alone.”
Bun Keo, a police officer with Ratanakkiri provincial police, said the suspect was accused of murder accompanied by rape, and faces a life sentence if convicted.
