A 17-year-old boy died and a 35-year-old man was seriously injured after a mini bus caught fire on Tuesday evening in Kampong Thom province’s Santhuk district.
The fire sparked at about 5pm on National Road 6 in Prasath commune after the bus, which was carrying the two victims and many bottles of gasoline, crashed.
Deputy district police chief Seng Pich said a mechanical malfunction caused the bus to crash, igniting the bottles of gasoline and leading to an explosion.
Mr Pich said the driver of the bus and the 17-year-old worker were trapped inside, leading to the boy’s death and serious injuries to the 35-year-old driver.
“While the bus was on fire, our police worked very hard to rescue the victims,” he said. “But we could not save one of them because he was stuck and was already dead; we could only rescue the driver.”
He added that it took two fire trucks and about one hour to put out the inferno.
He identified the survivor as Chin Kimchhoy, a gas vendor from Kampong Thom province, who was recovering from full-body burns in hospital.
Chim Chheng An was identified as the deceased victim. His body has been sent to his family for a funeral.
