More than 60 workers at the Juhui Footwear factory in Kampong Cham province’s Cheung Prey district fainted on Friday due to a lack of air in the workplace.

Cheng Heang, director of the provincial labour department, said yesterday that 66 workers fainted on Friday morning while they were working and were immediately sent to the provincial referral hospital for assistance.

“The ventilation fan at the workplace broke from all the rain which made it hot and stuffy and caused them to faint,” he said.

Mr Heang said the factory allowed workers who were not sick to return home and the workers who fainted or felt unwell were sent to hospital for treatment.

They have already recovered and left the hospital, he said, adding that a total of more than 3,000 workers would resume work today.

“No one got seriously sick,” he said, adding that three pregnant women had fainted as well.

According to a report from the National Social Security Fund, the number of workers fainting in 2017 decreased 28 percent when compared with 2016, with incidents happening in 18 factories around the country. A total of 1,160 workers fainted in 2017, of which 1,159 were women.
