The royalist Funcipec party has dismissed four of its members after an intraparty conflict, which centred on a petition to have two top-level party members fired.
Prince Norodom Ranariddh, party president, signed the writ on Thursday that stripped four officials of their party membership. He gave no reason for their dismissal.
They are: Deputy Secretary-General Seng Haksrun, Nop Phorn, Meach Samroul, and Pheap Pheach.
This action was taken after a petition requesting the dismissal of Por Bun Sreu, deputy party president, and Secretary-General Yim Savy went public. The petition, addressed to Prince Ranariddh, also accused the two of nepotism and inability to lead the party.
It is assumed that Mr Haksrun is author of the petition, with the support of other party members.
Party spokesman Nheb Bun Chin told Khmer Times that they acted in violation of party regulations and compromised the party’s repute. He also said that Mr Haksrun leaked the petition’s unsubstantiated allegations to the media, which caused some measure of distress within the party.
Mr. Bun Chin said that such complaints should be dealt with within the party, and not thrust into the public eye. “Because they [the fired four] did this, we decided that they could not stay with us.”
