Two military police officers based in Takhmao city were suspended from their positions yesterday for allegedly allowing the escape of a police officer who had been busted for dealing drugs.

Bun Rithy, deputy commander of Kandal provincial military police, said Second Lieutenant Leang Vichetr and four civilians had been arrested on Saturday afternoon after military police raided Lt Vichetr’s home in Takhmao city.

Police seized eight packages of crystal methamphetamine, two phones, two motorbikes and related drug materials, he added.

Mr Rithy said the five suspects were charged on Monday with drug use and trafficking and temporarily detained at the Takhmao city military police station pending trial.

The five suspects were guarded by two military police officers, but Lt Vichetr managed to escape from the detention room late on Tuesday evening.

“We suspect these two military officials were accomplices of the suspect and released him. So we decided to suspend their jobs temporarily and put them under the control of provincial military police,” he said.

“They will face legal charges from the provincial court’s prosecutor if the suspect is not rearrested.”

Military police are now seeking to recapture the suspect, he added, while declining to identify his alleged accomplices.

Provincial military police commander Brigadier General Sam Tola could not be reached for comment yesterday.
