A police officer was arrested on Tuesday after he stabbed a man in Phnom Penh’s Daun Penh district while under the influence of drugs.

The attack occurred in the park next to the Independence Monument.

Bun Vireak, an officer with Daun Penh district police, identified the suspect as Second Lieutenant Sith Panha, 28, an officer with the Interior Ministry’s police inspection unit. He was arrested later that day. The victim, Ma Rithy, 53, a teacher, suffered lacerations to his head and hands.

He was seriously injured and is currently in hospital for treatment.

Mr Vireak said the victim was simply walking around the park for exercise, when the suspect, who had taken drugs, attacked him.

“The attack was so violent, no witnesses dared to intervene, especially because the attacker had a knife,” he said.

Mr Vireak said the suspect was under questioning and faces charges of drug use and intentional acts of violence.
