Former National Election Committee member Rong Chhun has been appointed as a consultant to the Cambodian Independent Teachers’ Association after he resigned from the NEC following the opposition CNRP’s dissolution.
CITA’s board of directors sent a letter on Sunday announcing their decision to appoint Mr Chhun as a consultant. Mr Chhun was a former director at CITA.
“He will work as a consultant for CITA to help with national and international affairs, plan strategies for the association, and interact with journalists over social affairs and education,” the letter read.
In December, Mr Chhun stepped down from his role as a member of the NEC because he had been appointed to the position by the CNRP.
When the party was dissolved by the Supreme Court in November, he no longer felt able to serve the committee, saying it would mean betraying his conscience.
Mr Chhun took up his post at the NEC on April 13, 2015. He decided to join on behalf of the opposition to help reform the organisation.
He said yesterday he was pleased to come back to the teachers’ association to help in the education and social sectors.
