Two Buddhist monks were charged with drug use and possession yesterday by Preah Sihanouk Provincial Court after 23 packages of crystal methamphetamine were found in their pagoda.
Seng Sophal, a police officer with the provincial anti-drug unit, said Sok Panha, 32, and Pov Tivoan, 29, were both monks residing at Tuol Keo Pagoda in Prey Nob district’s Teuk Lao commune.
Mr Sophal said they were arrested on Friday when police raided their room at the pagoda, where they were caught in the act of smoking the drugs.
They also both tested positive in a drug test.
The pair was defrocked by the head of Preah Sihanouk provincial monks on Saturday, and are now being detained pending their trial.
