Oddar Meanchey Provincial Court charged a local journalist yesterday with multiple instances of rape and sexual abuse against his underage step-daughter over the past three years.

Mao Chantha, an officer with the provincial major crimes unit, identified the suspect as Prak Ean, 65, a journalist with Banteay Srey newspaper. He was charged with rape with aggravating circumstances and faces up to 15 years in jail.

He said Mr Ean was arrested on Friday after he last raped his 13-year-old step-daughter. His wife filed the complaint against him.

Duong Sopheak, deputy police chief of Anglong Veng district, said that investigations revealed the accused had been raping his step-daughter since 2016. However, she did not dare to report him because he threatened to kill her should she tell anybody.

The victim’s mother wasn’t home on Thursday, so Mr Ean once again assaulted the victim. But on Friday morning, as he was attempting to rape her again, his wife came home and caught him in the act.

The victim told her mother of the accused crimes, and they went to report Mr Ean to the police.
