The construction of an appeal court in Tbong Khmum province is expected to be completed in 2018 to speed up people’s appeal complaints.

Justice Ministry spokesman Chin Malin was lecturing university students and NGO officials about judicial reforms yesterday when he announced the impending completion of the new appeal court.

Mr Malin said after this new appeal court is completed, the government would create two additional appeal courts in Preah Sihanouk and Battambang provinces.

“We aim to build seven new appeal courts around the country,” he said.

However, Mr Malin said the government cannot build them all at once due to budget constraints. He said he did not know how much the Economy Ministry was willing to allocate to the project.

Heang Sopheak, Tbong Khmum Provincial Court prosecutor, said there would be a groundbreaking ceremony for the opening of the appeal court on January 25, which will be attended by the Justice Minister.

Nop Sothunvicheth, Economy Ministry spokesman, simply said he was aware of the project but declined to comment further.

“We want people to seek justice easily, so they need to find an appeal court close to where they live,” Mr Malin said. “We don’t want people to waste time and money to travel from the provinces to Phnom Penh.”
