A 45-year-old woman was arrested and sent to Battambang Provincial Court yesterday for alleged human trafficking.

Koy Heang, director of the provincial anti-human trafficking and juvenile protection unit, said his forces arrested Yoeun Pheap from Bavel district’s Ampil Pram commune.

He said Ms Pheap had been involved in a case where victims were being trafficked to Malaysia in 2016.

“The suspect is not the mastermind, but an accomplice who conspired with a team of masterminds. She looked for victims and took them to the mastermind to get some money in exchange,” he said.

However, Mr Heang could not confirm the number of victims that had been duped by the suspect.

A Bavel district police officer who asked not to be named added that many victims had been deceived by the woman, and police were still investigating additional perpetrators.

“Some of the victims live in the same village, and some are from other districts. We are now seeking to arrest two to three more people who were also involved,” he said.

Provincial court prosecutor Noun San could not be reached for comment yesterday.

According to Mr Heang, the suspect has already been sent to the provincial court and is being temporarily detained at the provincial prison while awaiting further legal procedures.
