Stung Treng Provincial Court yesterday charged a journalist with fraud after he cheated an owner of a gold shop in Stung Treng city.

Court spokesman Chhum Seang Hak said Van Samnang was charged with fraud, but declined further comment.

Hor Vuthy, provincial minor crimes bureau chief, said that Mr Samnang, 47, a reporter for Taprum Weekly News, was arrested in Stung Treng market on Monday afternoon after he cheated money from the owner of a gold shop.

Mr Vuthy said that Mr Samnang brought two fake rings to sell at the gold shop, one worth about $75 and the other $125.

The owner bought the rings but at the same time notified police they were likely fake and led officers to the suspect.

“Mr Samnang was sent to the provincial court on Tuesday and charged with fraud,” Mr Vuthy said. “The court ordered him to be detained at the provincial prison.”

Phum Chesda, publisher of the paper, could not be reached for comment.
