An 18-year-old suspect was arrested on Monday for allegedly trying to smuggle 10 kilograms of dried marijuana across the Cambodia-Vietnam border in Takeo province’s Kirivong district.
Deputy district police chief Muth Sarath identified the suspect as Keo Phou, a farmer living in Kirivong district’s Preah Bath Choanchoum commune.
Mr Sarath said Mr Phou was seen driving a motorbike near the border at about 3pm on Monday.
When he saw the police patrolling the border checkpoint, he drove away quickly and fled into dense forest. Police gave chase and arrested him in a nearby village, according to Mr Sarath.
“He was arrested after he drove a motorbike transporting dried marijuana in Preah Bath Choanchoum commune to sell at the Vietnamese border,” he said.
“After his arrest, we seized a total of nine large packages of dried marijuana weighing 10 kilograms, and a motorbike from him.”
Mr Sarath said the suspect was preliminarily charged with trafficking and possessing dried marijuana and will be sent to Takeo Provincial Court for questioning today.
