Vietnamese police in Kien Giang province on Sunday arrested a Cambodian rice trader when he returned to Cambodia after collecting money from Vietnamese people who bought his rice and was caught with more than $43,000, according to a Cambodian police official and a Vietnamese media report.

Mao Chanmathurith, the police chief of Kampot province which borders Kien Giang province in Vietnam, confirmed the incident and said the man was arrested on Sunday.

“It is not a smuggling case. He sold the rice to Vietnamese citizens and then went there to collect the money for the rice. He entered Vietnam through the Bi-Party Border Gate Ton Hon,” he said.

Mr Chanmathurith said Hou Nat, who was identified in the Vietnamese media report, was likely to have had more money than the Vietnamese law allows and he failed to report it to the authorities.

According to Vietnam’s Toui Tre News, Mr Hou Nat was arrested for transporting currency and products across the border without declaring them, which is against Article 189 under Vietnam’s Penal Code.

Mr Chanmathurith added that he was trying to intervene in the case by sending his deputy to negotiate with Vietnam’s provincial police to bring the Cambodian national home.
