Two women were arrested on Friday at a warehouse in Stung Treng town as they were about to conduct an illegal timber transaction.
Sok Sida, a Stung Treng provincial forestry administration official, said the two women were detained pending court proceedings.
“We seized 195 pieces of luxury thnong hardwood. We arrested two women and sent both of them to the provincial court according to forestry law,” he said.
He identified one suspect as a Vietnamese timber buyer and the other as a Cambodian national, the owner of the land where the timber was purchased from villagers. He declined to reveal their identities.
“The operation was led by provincial court prosecutor Kim Hongsan. After the prosecutor led the forces to arrest the two suspects, we went to collect the timber to bring to our office,” Mr Sida said. Mr Hongsan declined to comment yesterday.
