Siem Reap provincial police yesterday arrested nineteen fake monks who had been collecting alms in the province for more than a month.
Brigadier General Hout Sothy said police received a complaint from local clergy members, reporting that fake monks were acting illegally in the province.
He said police cooperated with religious leaders to arrest the suspects, who posed as monks to collect alms in markets and public areas in the province.
“After collecting alms, they went back to sleep in guest houses,” Brig Gen Sothy said.
He added that amongst the suspects, two were found to be drug addicts. According to a police report, the suspects were from different provinces, including Preah Vihear, Takeo, Battambang, and Kampong Speu.
They are currently being questioned by police.
