A cargo train ran over and killed a 17-year-old student who fell asleep on the tracks in Takeo province’s Daun Keo town on Sunday night.
The victim was identified as Saut Chhe Ran, a high school student and the son of a Roka Knong commune police officer.
Deputy town police chief Korp Sokhom said the victim was likely drunk when he fell asleep on the tracks.
“He was the son of my police officer and had gone to sit on the tracks at about 9pm,” he said.
“The train is always honking. It did not stop after the accident,” he added.
Mr Sokhom said there would be no discussion of compensation for the family because the train always follows the same route at the same time and it was the responsibility of the public not to sit on the tracks.
“The father was made aware of his son’s death at about 7am the next day,”’ he said.
