A foreign national was arrested on Sunday for using counterfeit money to buy cigarettes in Phnom Penh’s Sen Sok district.
District police officer Chuon Vuth identified the suspect as a 39 year old tourist.
Mr Vuth said the suspect attempted to buy cigarettes from Pich Reaksmey, a grocery shop owner, using a fake $50 bill.
“Ms Reaksmey realised it was a fake bill, refused the exchange and contacted local police,” he said.
The suspect was arrested later on Sunday.
He is being detained at the district police station and will be sent to court today, where he could face charges of “circulating fake currency”, which carries a sentence of up to five years.
