Five Cambodians were killed and three injured in a traffic accident in Thailand’s Chachoengsao province on Wednesday, as they travelled to Bangkok in search of work.

The National Police website said the driver of the pickup and four workers died at the scene in Phanom Sarakam district.

Thai authorities said the pickup truck had crashed into the back of an 18-wheel truck amid heavy rain.

Pol Capt Sa-ngob Khotyo, a deputy chief investigator at Phanom Sarakham station, told local media that three men and two women died in the incident. A man, woman and a two-year-old boy were badly hurt and rushed to a nearby hospital.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed. Thai authorities and the Cambodian embassy are investigating.

Police said the accident happened because of the rain but the driver might have fallen asleep at the wheel.
