Thai authorities yesterday released ten Cambodians arrested last weekend for logging luxury timber in Sa Kaeo province.

The Cambodian consulate in the province said the ten had been arrested on Sunday in Pang Sida National Park.

“They were released from prison yesterday at 3pm after being fined 2,500 baht ($72) each,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Chum Sounry said, adding that consular officials were working to get them home last night.

The ten are all from Banteay Meanchey province.

Another nine Cambodians were also arrested for logging last Saturday in Thailand’s Sisaket province.

They were found with luxury timber and drugs and are still being detained.

The Cambodian consulate has sent officials to visit them and is making sure they have access to lawyers.

The nine are from Oddor Meanchey, Kampong Thom and Kampong Speu provinces.
