Police in Preah Sihanouk province yesterday arrested 20 Chinese suspects accused of running an illegal online gambling business.

Provincial police chief Choun Narin said the group was arrested following an investigation by specialist officers ordered by provincial court prosecutor Lim Bunheng.

“The suspects have been detained for questioning and police are gathering evidence, including computers and other related materials,” he said.

The crackdown took place in Chamkar Spei village, Preah Sihanouk town.

Cheap Sotheary, a provincial officer for rights group Adhoc, said she was worried about the threat that gambling poses to people in Preah Sihanouk.

She said the province is small, but there are many legal casinos, aside from numerous illegal operations.

“Chinese people often rent expensive houses in Preah Sihanouk province,” she said.

“They not only run illegal gambling businesses, but commit other crimes, such as kidnapping people who owe them money. I am worried about all those that are affected by issues related to gambling.”
