Woman confesses to dealing drugs in her house
A 67-year-old woman went on trial yesterday for alleged drug trafficking and hiring out rooms in her house for drug use.
Grocery vendor Pov Samnang is accused of selling drugs to users in Trapaing Chhouk village where she lives.
She is accused also with charging between 10,000 riel [about $2.50] and 20,000 riel [$5] to let people use drugs in her rented rooms in the village, a popular drug-using area in Phnom Penh.
Municipal Court judge Duch Sarin said Ms. Samnang was arrested when police raided her house in December.
In court, Ms. Samnang confessed she had been selling drugs in the village for nine months before her arrest.
She said she bought them from an unidentified man in the village. She divided them into small packages which she sold for 60,000 riels [$15] to 100,000 riels [about $25].
She could make 40,000-70,000 riel [$10 to $17.50] per package.
“I decided to sell drugs was because I needed to make money to pay for treatment. I have had a heart attack,” she told the court, asking for leniency. The verdict is due on Thursday next week.
